Review: These are seriously THE BEST markers on the market (and no, I’m not getting endorsed by Crayola to say that but I’m open to it if you’re reading this Crayola people!) Pip squeak markers are the best size for little hands (ages 3-5) and Crayola unknowingly does it right in terms of visual cues for a tripod grasp with their iconic wavy lines at the bottom of the marker. I call these wavy lines “racing stripes” and I tell kids that if you pinch them just right, you can color beautifully! Little hands need little coloring utensils and cues for finger placement. Plus, these markers are so little that they’re easy to transport and store. My OT dream would be to go into every preschool, kindergarten, and first grade classroom and replace their big ol’ markers (which can actually promote some funky grasps because of their length) with these!

Adaptations: As much as I love the little size of these markers, these aren’t the best for early artists (12-24 months) or those with fine motor/grasp challenges. For these groups of kids, you’ll want to look for built-up coloring utensils such as dot markers, egg crayons, or jumbo-sized chalk, which requires a more developmentally appropriate palmar or power grasp.
